Fighter Tiers

Every UFC fighter is classified into one of three tiers: Elite, Mid, or Low. Tiers provide a quick snapshot of where a fighter stands in the competitive landscape based on their performance metrics.

Tier Overview

TierWhat It Means
EliteProven top-level fighters who win consistently and dominate when they win
MidCompetitive fighters who hold their own but haven't reached the elite level
LowFighters who are either early in their career, on a decline, or consistently underperforming

Elite Tier

To earn Elite status, a fighter must meet all of the following criteria and have at least 5 UFC fights:

CriterionThresholdPurpose
Win Rate60%+Consistent winner
Sig Strikes Diff+10 per fightStatistically dominant
Recent Win Rate40%+Not on a significant losing streak
Specialist CriterionMeet any one belowDemonstrates a clear skill edge

Specialist Criteria (any one qualifies)

PathThreshold
Finish Rate30%+
Knockdown Diff+0.3 per fight
Takedown Diff+1.0 per fight
Control Time Diff+60 seconds per fight

A fighter can qualify through finishing ability, knockout power, wrestling dominance, or grappling control — they only need to excel in one area.

Staying Elite (Hysteresis)

Once a fighter reaches Elite status, they get a buffer before being demoted. The demotion thresholds are slightly lower than the promotion thresholds, preventing fighters from bouncing between tiers after a single bad fight:

CriterionPromotionDemotion
Win Rate60%55%
Sig Strikes Diff+10+8
Recent Win Rate40%30%

A fighter must drop below the demotion thresholds to lose Elite status.

Mid Tier

A fighter is classified as Mid if they have at least 3 UFC fights and meet any of these conditions:

  • 40%+ win rate, OR
  • Positive differential in at least one major stat category (strikes, knockdowns, takedowns, or control time)
  • Must not be on a 3-fight losing streak

Mid tier is the broadest category. It captures everyone from gatekeepers to rising contenders who haven't yet accumulated enough dominant performances for Elite status.

Low Tier

Low tier is the default classification. Fighters are placed here when they:

  • Have fewer than 3 UFC fights (too early to assess)
  • Are on a 3+ fight losing streak
  • Have a sub-40% win rate with no positive stat differentials
  • Are declining veterans who've fallen below Mid thresholds

Tier Progression

Tiers are re-evaluated after every fight. A fighter's tier can change as their career statistics evolve:

Debut -> Low (default) -> Mid (after showing competitiveness)
      -> Elite (after proving dominance)

Tiers can also move in reverse. A former Elite fighter who goes on a losing streak will drop to Mid, and eventually Low if the decline continues.

Example: Path to Elite

Fighter A enters the UFC and goes 5-0 with 3 finishes:

  • After fight 1-2: Low (fewer than 3 fights)
  • After fight 3: Mid (3 fights, 100% win rate, positive differentials)
  • After fight 5: Elite (5 fights, 100% win rate, +14 sig strikes diff, 60% finish rate, 100% recent win rate)

Fighter B has 8 fights at 5-3:

  • Win rate: 62.5% (passes 60%)
  • Sig strikes diff: +12 (passes +10)
  • Recent win rate: 60% (passes 40%)
  • Finish rate: 25% but +1.2 takedown diff (specialist criterion met via wrestling)
  • Classification: Elite

Fighter C has 10 fights at 4-6:

  • Win rate: 40% (meets Mid threshold)
  • No positive differentials
  • Not on a 3-fight losing streak
  • Classification: Mid
